Wayne Rooney names 'standout' Man Utd player who has proved him wrong

Manchester United are coming off their biggest win under Ruben Amorim, after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire saw off Liverpool in the Premier League over the weekend.

Mbeumo scored just 63 seconds into the game, and Maguire netted a late winner after Cody Gakpo equalized for the Reds.

Mbeumo scored his third goal in all competitions for United, and Wayne Rooney has named him as United's player of the season so far, despite having doubts about the new signing.

What did Rooney say about Mbeumo?

Mbeumo arrived from Brentford over the summer for up to £71m, after a standout 2024/25 season.

The Cameroonian had 20 league goals for the Bees last season, but Rooney was still unconvinced that he could be the difference maker for United.

On his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, the former striker discussed the win over Liverpool and the impact Mbeumo has had this season.

Rooney said, "For me, he has been Manchester United’s standout player this season, and he hasn’t got his rewards for his hard work and the sacrifices he’s made for the team throughout the season.

"I thought it was a great goal, and I’ll be honest, I was a bit sceptical when Manchester United signed him. I didn’t know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he’s proved me wrong.

"I think he’s been a great addition to the team and by far United’s best player of the season. That’s such a huge win for the manager.

"I’ve been one of them, I’ve questioned decisions, tactics, players’ desire over this season and last season, and that win is massive, to win at Anfield—that's not easy to do."
