Lindsey Vonn turned emotional after registering her first win of the 2025-26 skiing season. This was the American's 83rd career World Cup victory and the first since 2018.

Vonn kick-started her season with a bang, as she earned a World Cup downhill win at St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Friday, December 12. She reached the finish line in 1:29.63 seconds and was just a second ahead of Magdalena Egger, who claimed the second-place finish in the race.

Australia's Mirjam Puchner claimed third place. Before this, Vonn's last World Cup win came seven years ago in Are, Sweden.

Shortly after this iconic win, the 41-year-old's video of turning emotional on the podium was shared by FIS Alpine. She was seen breaking down in tears with the trophy in her hand while the national anthem played. The post's caption on Instagram read:

"Who’s cutting onions? 😭😭😭 Congrats @lindseyvonn 🇺🇸 amazing!"

This was also Vonn's first victory after her comeback from the six-year-long hiatus. She returned to the sport in December last year and claimed a second-place finish in the Super-G at the World Cup finals in Sun Valley, Idaho.

The American is scheduled to compete in her second World Cup downhill race in St. Moritz on Saturday, December 13.

Lindsey Vonn made her feelings known about winning her first World Cup in seven years

Following her win at St. Moritz, Lindsey Vonn had a conversation with Ski Racing, where she opened up about her victory. Talking about her performance, she said that she was faster than she expected and is looking forward to her next race. Additionally, she admitted to making some mistakes.

Stating that she and her team worked really hard for this, she said:

“We worked really hard for this — not just me, but the whole team, from equipment to physical training. I knew I was skiing fast, but you never really know until the first race. I think I was a little faster than I expected. I had a great run, but I also made some mistakes, which actually makes me excited for tomorro," said Lindsey Vonn.

She added:

"I focused on skiing the pitch clean and carrying speed to the bottom, and that worked. Now it’s about keeping the rhythm, managing energy, and executing the plan again. I’m really excited - especially for super-G, because I’m skiing even better there.”

Before her race, Lindsey Vonn showed support for two-time Olympic champion Michelle Gisin, after the latter faced a serious crash during her second downhill training run in St. Moritz.
