According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, former Los Angeles Lakers standout forward LeBron James is nearing his looming free agency decision, and the Golden State Warriors remain on his list of potential targets.
Signing James will present its fair share of obstacles, as NBA reporter Evan Sidery reported that it’ll be challenging for the franchise to pull off a headline-worthy deal without trading for a 6-foot-10 Los Angeles Lakers NBA champion castoff.
“The Warriors remain in active pursuit of signing LeBron James, but landing him still likely depends on trading for Anthony Davis,’ Sidery wrote on X/Twitter Sunday.
Sidery then suggested that the Warriors could do what seems impossible and acquire Davis by shipping Jimmy Butler and valuable draft capital to the Washington Wizards.
“Golden State would need to send out Jimmy Butler and multiple 1st-round picks for the Wizards to even consider it.”
Contrary to popular belief, Sidery’s hypothetical trade package would fall short, as Charania previously reported that the Wizards are demanding Butler, multiple first-round picks, multiple second-round picks, and multiple pick swaps in a potential trade for Davis.
Given that Davis is essentially a Kristaps Porzingis clone in terms of his health/availability, poaching him from Washington at that price would be borderline asinine. However, if it proves to be the only way to land James this summer, they may feel inclined to overpay for the 10-time All-Star.
