Warriors urged to cut ties with legendary $62 million four-time NBA champion via blockbuster trade

The Golden State Warriors are on thin ice moving forward.

After signing Steve Kerr to a two-year contract following a postseason-less 2025-26 campaign, the expectation will be that the franchise keeps its slim title window alive by fielding a roster capable of doing damage in the Western Conference.

Interestingly, Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley doesn’t believe the Warriors have high-level success in their immediate future, prompting him to float the idea of the Dubs cutting ties with their legendary four-time NBA champion after nearly two decades.

“Legendary careers almost never end the way we want them to, but this feels like a particularly meaningless way for such a transcendent talent to go out,” Buckley wrote Monday. “Especially when that player still appears so close to the peak of their magical, game-breaking powers.”

“The 30.9 points per 36 minutes he posted this season were the third-highest of his career. The Warriors will never admit this, but a trade could be best for their future and Curry's. At the very least, rival front offices should be feverishly working to convince them of that.”

This isn’t the first time Curry has found himself in the middle of a blockbuster trade rumor. When the Warriors started the 2024-25 season in a lackluster fashion, some NBA pundits suggested that it could be time for the franchise to blow up its roster and allow Curry to compete for a championship elsewhere.

Obviously, Golden State pulled off a monster deal for Jimmy Butler and wound up not only reaching the playoffs but upsetting the No. 2-seeded Houston Rockets in the first round. The Warriors found themselves back at square one before this year’s trade deadline, but elected to retain Curry and trade for Kristaps Porzingis in an attempt to make a second-half playoff push.

Unfortunately, Golden State’s postseason quest fell short, as the Phoenix Suns defeated them in their second Play-In game. Is it time for the seven-time NBA champions to give up on their title pursuit and begin rebuilding?

While things don’t appear promising, it makes far more sense for Curry and Kerr to spend the next two seasons alongside each other in the Bay and attempt to work their magic (hopefully with a more talented supporting cast). Once Kerr’s contract expires, Curry will get a chance to assess the state of the Warriors and decide what’s best for his NBA future.

Simply put, it would be best for Curry to stay put for at least two more seasons before potentially searching for greener pastures.
