Warriors trade idea swaps Jonathan Kuminga for $70 million former Duke star

Although the Golden State Warriors have made it known they’re exploring sign-and-trade options for Jonathan Kuminga, they haven’t made significant progress lately.

However, Sports Illustrated’s Jackson Caudell and Rohan Roman are optimistic that the Warriors could swap Kuminga for a former Duke star in a three-team summer deal.

“Kuminga never really seemed to fit with Golden State, and getting back players who can help Stephen Curry chase a title now, while adding a really valuable draft asset, is a win for the Warriors,” Caudell and Roman wrote Friday.

“They get veteran players (Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale) to help their roster try and win now, and they could use that pick (unprotected 2032 first-rounder) to try and acquire another player. They still need to find a center for their roster.”

For clarity, the Warriors would receive Allen, O’Neale, and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick swap, the Phoenix Suns would receive Kuminga and Moses Moody, and the Atlanta Hawks would receive Nick Richards in Caudell and Roman's trade idea.

Allen was a standout four-year contributor at Duke before entering the 2018 NBA Draft, winning an NCAA title as a freshman, receiving first team All-ACC honors as a sophomore, and averaging 14.1 points per game for his career on solid shooting splits (41.8% from the field and 38.0% from three-point land).

Allen played satisfactory basketball with the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, and Milwaukee Bucks to begin his NBA career, but has emerged as an elite three-point shooting threat with the Suns.

The 29-year-old long-range sniper connected on 46.1% of his three-point jumpers in 2023-24 and 42.6% this past season.

Considering The Stein Line’s Jake Fisher recently reported that the Suns are interested in taking Kuminga off the Warriors’ hands this summer, Allen and Kuminga could switch places in the next few weeks.
