LeBron James is the biggest story to watch this offseason as he is set to become a free agent. James was without Luka Doncic in the playoffs, and it caused the Los Angeles Lakers to struggle mightily.
This marks the third offseason in which James’ retirement has been a real possibility. After this season, James made it clear that his decision will be a family matter.
“With my future, I don't know," James said after Game 4. "Obviously still fresh from losing. I don't know. I don't know what the future holds for me, obviously. As it stands right now tonight, I've got a lot of time. I'll sit back like I think I said last year after we lost to Minnesota, I'll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them and spend some time with them. When the time comes, obviously, you guys will know what I decide to do."
If he does return, there are plenty of options for where he could land. One possibility is the Golden State Warriors.
“The Warriors are over the cap, so the best they can do is clear enough salary to offer the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception of $15 million to James. One might think that eliminates any chance of getting the four-time Finals MVP, but the truth is most contenders can't offer more than that,” SI’s Joey Akeley wrote.
While a move to the Warriors seems far-fetched, Steph Curry is reportedly willing to do whatever it takes to land him, including meeting with James to discuss the possibility.
“Pairing him with Stephen Curry is going to be something that the Warriors are going to pursue over the next few weeks… It seemed very doubtful, it seemed low percentage, now it’s kind of questionable. Now there’s going to be some legs to this… That same source told us that Steph is planning on meeting and talking with LeBron about potentially joining the Warriors over the course of the next few weeks leading up to free agency,” NBA insider Brett Siegel said.
Curry and James formed a strong duo during the Olympics, meshing well to help Team USA bring home a gold medal. Steve Kerr served as head coach, which already provides James some familiarity, as he has played under him before.
With the possibility still on the table for the Warriors to land him, Curry is reportedly prepared to do whatever it takes to bring James to Golden State. This has long been a “what if” duo, but now it appears it could become a reality next season.
