The Golden State Warriors have been navigating Steph Curry's future throughout the offseason, as his contract extension is on the horizon and everyone is wondering when it will come to fruition. The Warriors' future is somewhat in Curry's hands with his extension.
There is no doubt Golden State is going to give him the contract he wants. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that there is not going to be much negotiation, as the Warriors are prepared to let Curry decide what he wants.
“It's not whether or not Steve is going to sign. It's what's on the plate. Just to give you guys some insight when you're over the age of 38 in the NBA you can only sign for a maximum of three years. This is an old rule from the '90s. And it's used to be over 36, but when Chris Paul and LeBron James were running the players association, they were getting close to their late 30's they pushed it to 38. Curry makes $62 million this year, so he can add 2 years onto it. Or he can do a 1 year max or just wait. The Warriors are putting the decision in Steph's hands. There is no negotiation," Windhorst stated.
Curry has already made it clear that he doesn't want to leave the Warriors.
“Not at all. I've always stated that I wanna be a lifer with Golden State… My mission is to stay in Golden State and be competitive, the contract stuff will take care of itself," Curry said.
On Thursday, Curry appeared on ESPN and made it clear that while he doesn't care about the specifics of his extension, he does care about being on a competitive team.
“All the different salary cap conditions of whether I sign for max or less or whatever it is, I want to be on a competitive team,” Curry said on NBA Today.
It is going to be an interesting season for Golden State as the team looks to remain competitive while Jimmy Butler is sidelined for some time. The Warriors also were not able to do much in free agency over the summer.
Curry also has a major role in the future of this team beyond his own contract. The Warriors' ability to remain competitive could play a role in what happens with Butler and the rest of the roster. There are a lot of factors surrounding Curry that could either help make his wish of playing on a competitive team come true or make it much more difficult.
