Warriors' Steph Curry gets major contract extension update: 'There is no negotiation'

The Golden State Warriors did not have the best offseason by any means, but they were able to bring back some familiar faces. The Warriors are entering the final stages of both Draymond Green and Steph Curry’s careers.

However, Curry is expected to receive a contract extension at some point soon, and the deal is set to be a hefty one for this stage of his career.

“What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants. If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal," NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.

The only thing with Curry is that his extension has a lot riding on it.

“There's still players becoming contract extension eligible. By next week you'll start to see Steph Curry's name come up. On the 29th of August he's extension eligible for his contract. I have argued that it should be considered that Steph doesn't sign the extension yet. But if he doesn't sign his contract extension right now the Warriors could have over $100 million in salary cap space next summer," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said.

Windhorst also provided an update on Curry and whether the Warriors are currently negotiating with him. He explained that there is essentially no negotiation taking place, as the decision will ultimately come down to what Curry wants.

“It’s not whether or not Steve is going to sign. It’s what’s on the plate. Just to give you guys some insight when you’re over the age of 38 in the NBA you can only sign for a maximum of three years. This is an old rule from the ‘90s. And it’s used to be over 36, but when Chris Paul and LeBron James were running the players association, they were getting close to their late 30’s they pushed it to 38. Curry makes $62 million this year, so he can add 2 years onto it. Or he can do a 1 year max or just wait. The warriors are putting the decision in Steph’s hands. There is no negotiation,” Windhorst stated.

This is exactly how an organization should treat a franchise player. Curry has played a massive role in helping the Warriors win four NBA championships during his historic tenure with the franchise.

There is no doubt that Curry is going to get paid, but for now, both sides are remaining patient. As Windhorst mentioned, whatever Curry ultimately asks for is what Golden State is prepared to give him.
