Warriors reportedly sign $2.6M athletic guard coming off career season to pair with Steph Curry

The Golden State Warriors have been rather quiet this summer when it comes to adding to their roster, leaving many people feeling bad for Steph Curry. Curry is nearing the end of his career, and the Warriors currently do not look like a team capable of competing for a championship.

Golden State has primarily focused on bringing back players on smaller deals, most of whom have played for the organization over the last few seasons.

“The Warriors are officially running it back despite missing the playoffs last season. Golden State re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, De'Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II this summer," NBA writer Jake Weinbach posted.

This has been one of the more interesting aspects of the Warriors' summer, to say the least, as they have not made many attempts to bring in new players. Finally, on Tuesday morning, Golden State signed Brandon Williams.

“The Golden State Warriors are signing free agent guard Brandon Williams to a one-year, $2.6 million minimum contract, agents Derek Lafayette and Curtis Lawrence told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday. Williams is the team's first outside acquisition in what has been an otherwise stable offseason, providing needed perimeter bench scoring and speed for a reserve unit that often lacked it last season,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote.

The Warriors had been interested in Williams for quite some time. The organization was reportedly targeting him as far back as July.

“Not much has changed regarding the Warriors' interest in Brandon Williams, which was reported by ClutchPoints in our story below from July 31. Williams remains a target, along with a few others, for their final roster spots," NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.

While this is not the flashy signing many Warriors fans were hoping for, it is still a worthwhile addition. Williams is a role player coming off the best season of his career, and he could provide the second unit with much-needed scoring and athleticism. He will also have the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest players in NBA history in Curry.

Golden State has not made many flashy moves this offseason, but the moves they have made could ultimately benefit the roster in meaningful ways. Now, the Warriors will have to hope their additions are enough to get them back into the playoffs this upcoming season.
