Warriors predicted to sign top available free agent left to over $20 million deal

The Golden State Warriors missed out on a lot of the top free agents of this year’s class. They still haven’t signed a new player, and it all hinges on Jonathan Kuminga’s free agency.

The Warriors are supposedly shopping Kuminga around to the league, looking for a sign-and-trade. The most recent reports indicate that they aren’t getting much traction. Don’t expect a Kuminga sign-and-trade any time soon.

NBA insider Brett Siegel just gave an update on the likelihood that Kuminga changes teams this offseason.

“[Kuminga] met with Golden State last week at the start of Summer League. The update I got was that things went as expected: No deal, but an understanding of what everything is looking like.

I still expect Kuminga staying in the $20M to $25M range with a PO and trade kicker.”

While this may sound rich, it is probably what Kuminga is worth in a normal market. There a lot of players who aren’t as good as Kuminga, with less potential, who are getting paid a lot more than that.

If the Warriors sign Kuminga to a palatable deal, they are hoping they can trade him before the trade deadline.

The reality is, Kuminga probably is the best available free agent on the market right now. The fact that the Warriors could get him on a team-friendly deal could provide valuable down the line.

If Kuminga shows his continued improvement in the first part of the season, the Warriors might have a tough decision. Keep an improving role player with star potential, or trade him to get veteran help immedeately.
