The Golden State Warriors are keeping the frontcourt intact this summer, for the most part (Quentin Post will depart for the Memphis Grizzlies if the Dubs fail to match their three-year, $30 million contract offer).
On Monday, the Golden State officially signed an ex-Boston Celtics NBA champion center to a new multi-year contract.
“The Golden State Warriors have signed center Al Horford to a multi-year contract, it was announced today,” the franchise’s press release stated. “Horford, 40, appeared in 45 games (13 starts) with the Warriors last season, averaging 12.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.13 blocks in 21.5 minutes per contest.”
“Horford is set to become the 13th player in NBA history to play a 20th season, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Jamal Crawford, Kevin Garnett, Udonis Haslem, LeBron James, Kyle Lowry, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul, Robert Parish, and Kevin Willis.”
While Horford’s availability was an issue last year (he missed 37 games), he played his role well in Year 1 with the Warriors. Horford, known for his ability to play effectively in the low post and stretch the floor with his dependable three-point shooting, averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 42.6% from the field and 36.1% from beyond the arc.
Retaining Horford isn’t a move that will improve the Warriors’ title odds, but it’ll keep the organization’s second unit frontcourt production solid.
