The Golden State Warriors may activate desperation mode sooner than later.
Former Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is likely out of reach, as ESPN’s Shams Charania recently reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat have emerged as the top three suitors for the 22-time All-Star.
Could the Dubs go all-in on Anthony Davis to give them a high-caliber Stephen Curry co-star? Perhaps, but Charania noted that the Washington Wizards’ asking price for Davis will be massive.
Specifically, Charania’s intel revealed that the Warriors will have to cut ties with Jimmy Butler, multiple first-round picks, multiple first-round pick swaps, and multiple second-round picks to have any shot of bringing to the Bay.
Would it be worthwhile for Golden State to mortgage its future for a win-now contributor who can’t remain healthy when it matters? Absolutely not, as there’s a high probability that the 10-time All-Star could endure a significant injury (or injuries) that would sideline him for an extended period.
In that scenario, Golden State wouldn’t move any closer to title contention while losing several assets that could’ve aided them during what figures to be a stressful post-Curry era. Simply put, Davis is a tremendous talent who will be a Hall of Famer when it’s all said and done, but he’s far too reliable at this stage of his career to break the bank on.
