Warriors attempting to outbid Heat, Cavs, Timberwolves, 76ers for $101 million ex-Lakers superstar

The Golden State Warriors’ fan base is likely starting to lose its patience following a relatively slow start to the offseason (Golden State’s most notable moves included re-signing Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and De’Anthony Melton).

The Warriors must make a splash if they want to change the perception surrounding their franchise. Landing a former Los Angeles Lakers star forward is a move that would certainly go a long way toward achieving that goal, and according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, it appears attainable.

Specifically, Charania noted that the Warriors are attempting to outbid the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Philadelphia 76ers for the four-time MVP’s services this summer.

"Every team that's in it still believes they have a chance (at LeBron James) and is still engaged with Rich Paul on a daily basis, hourly basis on figuring out what it would look like, what the vision is," Charania said Saturday. "Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Minnesota, Philadelphia, those are the five most predominant teams I've been hearing."

The Warriors’ ultimate master plan isn’t going according to plan.

On June 29, Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reported that the seven-time NBA championships hoped to trade for James’ ex-superstar Lakers teammate Anthony Davis before signing the 22-time All-Star to form a Big 4 of Davis, James, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green (Green opted out his $27.7 million player to give the Warriors to give the franchise more financial flexibility and is expected to re-sign with the organization).

The problem is, the Washington Wizards haven’t shown any signs of being open to making Davis available on the trade market. Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, went as far as to state that as it stands right now, Davis will begin the 2026-27 campaign alongside AJ Dybantsa and Trae Young in Washington.

“Yes, why wouldn't he play for the Wizards,” Paul said on a recent episode of the Game Over podcast when asked if Davis would remain with Washington months after landing with the franchise in a blockbuster trade (Dallas Mavericks).

That isn’t to say the Warriors can’t land James, though, as ESPN’s Bobby Marks is on the record stating that Golden State could make a $6 million veteran minimum deal to the four-time Finals MVP and sell him on the franchise’s short-term, win-now vision.

Considering the Cavaliers, Heat, Timberwolves, and 76ers could make similar offers/pitches to James, Golden State will have to work harder than usual to land their top free agent target. Still, the point is that the Warriors still possess hope despite not having a dream-like start to the offseason.
