Reacher star Alan Ritchson goes head-to-head with a killer alien robot in War Machine, the new sci-fi action flick that began streaming on Netflix today. (Not to be confused with the 2017 Brad Pitt movie War Machine, which was also a Netflix original film. No relation!)

Written and directed by Patrick Hughes (best known for The Hitman’s Bodyguard and its sequel), War Machine stars Ritchson as a grieving army veteran, enrolls in a brutal boot camp to become an “Army Ranger,” a fictional special ops group of the U.S. military that deals with classified incidents. Like, for example, an alien spaceship from another planet.

In addition to Ritchson, the War Machine cast includes Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jarryd Goundrey and Daniel Webber.

Despite the sci-fi premise, the War Machine plot is refreshingly simple and straight forward. But just in case you got lost along the way, read on for a break down of the War Machine movie plot summary and the War Machine movie ending explained.

War Machine 2026 movie plot summary:

We meet Alan Ritchson’s character—who we will later come to know only by his military-assigned number, 81—in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he’s been deployed with his younger brother. 81 shows up to fix a vehicle that’s broken down for his brother, which he does, while delivering a lecture to his brother to stop using Stop Leak, a quick-drying sealant, on the trucks.

“First law of thermodynamics, energy can’t be created or destroyed, so it’s gotta go somewhere,” 81 explains to his brother. “When you idiots fill these trucks with Stop Leak, you block the vents. Heat can’t escape. Pressure builds til the radiator blows.” You’ll want to remember that.

81’s brother laments that they are not seeing enough action in Army, and pleads with his big brother to join the “Ranger Assessment Selection Program” with him, a special ops branch of the army. Moments later, the soldiers are attacked by an unseen enemy. When 81 comes to, he sees his brother has been severely injured by the explosion, but not killed. He heaves his brother onto his back and begins to walk through the desert.

Cut to two years later, where 81 joins the boot camp program for RASP, and is assigned his number. We learn that 81 has a bad knee from the explosion, but he doesn’t let them stop him from training harder than any other recruit. He keeps to himself and is obsessed with “crossing the finish line,” aka the finish line of the final, simulated mission that recruits must accomplish if they make to the final round of the selection program. Meanwhile, the news is reporting that there’s a strange, unusual asteroid in the atmosphere that is baffling NASA. But that’s probably fine!

The camp counselors (played by Dennis Quaid and Esai Morales) start to worry about 81 after he passes out while walking the length of an indoor pool, carrying weights. (Fun fact: Ritchson really did that stunt!) They debate kicking him out, but decide he can stay, but only if he stops avoiding leadership positions. So, 81 makes it to the final round of tests, but he has to be the team leader of the simulated mission.

The mission: The recruits will be dropped in “enemy territory” where they must find and destroy a “classified aircraft,” so that the technology doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. They are warned they will have to fend off attacks from “cadre,” aka military staff who will be play acting as the “enemy.” Aww, they are gonna put on a little show for them!

On their way to the drop site, the recruits see a private quarry nearby the base. Remember that! While on the mission, one of the other guys, 7 (Stephen James) attempts to connect with 81 about, but 81 shuts him down. Soon after, the recruits discover a futuristic-looking aircraft crashed into the ground. They assume this is the “classified aircraft” planted for them to destroy, though they are surprised with how sophisticated it looks. Guess all that military budget has to go somewhere, in addition to subsidizing propaganda movies like this one. The soldiers dutifully set up explosives to destroy the ship.

While they are doing that, 81 follows a glinting light through the wilderness, and finds the actual simulation aircraft they are meant to blow up. It looks a lot more like a regular plane and a lot less like a ship from outer space. Remember that weird asteroid in the atmosphere? Yeah, it’s aliens. And they are not happy that these soldiers tried to blow up their ship.

We never see any organic form of alien life, because the alien space ship transforms into a Transformers-esque killer robot. 81 quickly deduces that this alien robot is dead set on hunting down and killing all the soldiers. Honestly, it does a pretty good job! After a lot of explosions, running, blood, and gore, the last soldiers standing are 81 and his buddy 7, who is alive but has an injured leg and needs to be carried.

At some point, 81 reveals that he almost got his injured brother to safety, but that he passed out right before he made it. It’s very clear that 81 sees rescuing 7 as his second chance to carry his brother out of the desert, to safety. But it’s looking less and less likely that’s going to happen, because this alien robot thing seems impossible to kill. Then, 81 gets an idea.

War Machine 2026 movie ending explained:

At the low point of the movie 7 reveals he knew 81’s brother, and asks 81 what his brother would do in this situation. “Probably fill it with Stop Leak,” 81 jokes. Wait a minute… say that part again.

81 realizes that this alien robot is using a ventilation system. That means, if he clogs up the vents, he can build up pressure to cause an explosion, just like the radiators in the trucks at the beginning of the movie. Thank god for the nearby private quarry that was mentioned in Act 2!

So, 81 heads to the nearby private quarry to lay a trap for the robot alien. His plan works: A bunch of gravel falls onto the robot, clogging up its vents. Et voila, it explodes like the Death Star and totally dies.

81 is able to carry the still-alive 7 to the safety of an emergency military base. Yay, he did it! 81 meets up with Dennis Quaid, who is still alive, and has some bad news: There are a lot more of those alien robot things attacking all over the planet. It’s a full-scale invasion. Luckily, 81 has the vital intel that will help the army fight back.

In the last scene of the movie, 81 is leading a new group of rangers on a mission to fight those robots. He even gives an inspiring speech, which he wasn’t able to do before. Growth! In the very last scene of the movie, an officer asks about 81’s name. No one knows. With that, the movie ends.

So will there be a War Machine 2? Will we ever learn 81’s real name? For that, we’ll just have to wait and see.

“I know exactly where I want to take it, and what that broader story is,” writer/director Patrick Hughes told Decider in a recent interview. “We absolutely love the character of 81. For me, I wanted to tell a film that started with the micro, and ended with the macro. And I thought that was a really unique take on the genre that we were working in. Let’s see what happens.”
