Wannabe thief stabs Long Island cop, then tries to hide under car: police

A Suffolk County police officer was stabbed by a knife-swinging suspect who tried to flee from cops and was found hiding under a car Tuesday morning, police said. 

Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to Gibbs Road near Coolidge Avenue in Amity Harbor, where a 911 caller reported men trying to steal from vehicles, according to Suffolk County Police. 

When cops arrived, they arrested Marcello Martinez, 19, at the corner of East Gibbs Road and Western Concourse, police said.

But his alleged cohort, Steven Vazquez, 22, bolted, according to authorities. 

A short time later, police found Vazquez hiding under a car nearby, cops said.

As the cornered perp tried to run off, he stabbed a cop in the upper right thigh and slashed him on the chin, police said.

A tourniquet was applied to the officer’s leg, and he was treated and released at a local hospital, cops said.

Officers managed to disarm and arrest Vazquez, of Bay Shore, who now faces charges of second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, menacing a police officer and grand larceny, cops said.

Martinez, of North Babylon, was charged with possession of burglar’s tools and criminal possession of stolen property, police said. 

Both are expected to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
