New developments in the death of Walmart employee Gursimran Kaur have emerged.
Local authorities concluded the death of the 19-year-old—who was found dead in a walk-in oven at the retailer’s Halifax location Oct. 19—was not suspicious and had no evidence of foul play, according to a press release issued by Halifax Regional Police Nov. 18.
“As a part of the investigation, we conducted several interviews, reviewed video footage and worked very closely with our partners at the Nova Scotia Department of Labor and medical examiner service,” Halifax Regional Police Public Information Officer Martin Cromwell said in a video statement Nov. 18. “Today, I can share that our investigation has not led us to suspect foul play.”
“We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death,” he continued. “The Department of Labor and the medical examiner service are continuing their work, but we do not believe the death to be suspicious.”
Cromwell added that police do not intend to issue further updates on the case “out of respect for the family.”
On the day of the tragedy, Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the retail store, was unable to find her for an hour, according to NBC News. After trying to track down Kaur’s whereabouts, she eventually discovered the teen in the walk-in oven located in the store’s bakery department, per the outlet.

Prior to Kaur’s death, the large appliance was set to be removed from the store, according to a Walmart Canada spokesperson.
“Removing the oven had always been part of the standard remodel program we are implementing across the country,” company spokesperson Amanda Moss said in a statement to CTV News. “This is an extremely sad and difficult situation.”
Kaur and her mother had moved to Canada from India around two years ago, according to NBC News. The pair were regular attendees of the Sikh Society worship center, and a GoFundMe page organized by the group to support Kaur’s family has raised over $194,000 CAD in the wake of the incident.
