Vinicius Junior is stuck in a tense contract standoff with Real Madrid that is starting to feel personal.
After months of discussions and a reportedly verbal agreement to extend his deal until 2030, things have now gone cold.
The club had hoped to tie him down early but the Brazilian forward has raised the stakes, demanding not only a pay hike but a renewal bonus that has made even Madrid’s top brass uncomfortable.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Vinicius wants to become the highest-paid player in the dressing room by matching or surpassing the €15m [$17m] net salary Kylian Mbappé earns each year.
He also wants a sizable signing bonus, similar to what Mbappe received when he joined as a free agent, which has also become a key point of friction between the player and the club.
Vinicius currently earns around €10m [$11m] a year and while his contract already runs until 2027, Madrid had been pushing to stretch it to 2030 to remove any future doubts.

Saudi clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation as Los Blancos try to make sure Vinicius does not enter the final stretch of his contract without a clear decision about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Even as the standoff drags on behind the scenes, Vinicius seems determined to keep his spirits high - at least off the pitch.
