The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray last week.
Does that spell the end for J.J. McCarthy? Well, depends on who you ask about this complicated QB situation.
The reality is a bit multi-faceted, ESPN's Dan Graziano explains in a new article on Monday.
Yes, Murray is likely to start.
But no, McCarthy isn't just totally done yet.
"Murray is very likely to end up starting ahead of McCarthy, unless a light goes on this offseason and McCarthy performs well enough in the summer to beat him out," Graziano writes. "But the Vikings aren't ready to give up on McCarthy just yet, and they're hoping Murray's arrival has a positive impact on him."
There's another reality happening here for the Vikings, and that's the stock they've put into Murray versus McCarthy.
Murray has come to town on a veteran minimum contract for one year as the Arizona Cardinals pay Murray most of what he'll earn in 2026.
McCarthy is entering his third season after being the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Vikings have put more eggs into McCarthy's basket, and he may still be more likely to be the long-term quarterback in Minnesota than Murray.
The Vikings need Murray for 2026, because their roster is too talented to falter again simply due to bad QB play.
But there is still room for McCarthy in this picture. It'll be up to him to make the most of it.
