Vikings' Kevin O'Connell shares news on J.J. McCarthy's future

The Minnesota Vikings have their starting quarterback in Kyler Murray. That's something J.J. McCarthy will have to learn to accept, and he's doing just that.

But, does that mean McCarthy is automatically the team's second quarterback, just behind Murray? This team also has veteran Carson Wentz and developmental signal-caller Max Brosmer. So, where does that leave second-year quarterback McCarthy?

One of the biggest questions after Murray was named starter has been McCarthy's role with this franchise now and in the future. Head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed that question on Wednesday.

J.J. McCarthy isn't guaranteed the QB2 job

Speaking to reporters, as shared in a video on the Vikings' Fan Page's X account, McCarthy said that McCarthy is doing all the right things to be the team's quarterback No. 2. But, he wasn't totally committal.

"What I would say is this: I did mean that in regards to the question of is he [the backup] is that he has taken all the two reps in practice and he's done really well," he told reporters. "You think about from the time we made that announcement until now, there's been some plays where I've been proud as heck... there's been some really good stuff. But, I want those guys feeling like they're competing."

He added that his he likes to keep the team's quarterback room competition. "I know you guys would roll your eyes every time I mentioned Carson [Wentz] and Max [Brosmer's] names throughout the offseason as part of it, but they're part of it. That's what we want throughout that quarterback room."

He added that he wants those quarterbacks to also feel like they're in the mix and have a chance to take the field. So, even though McCarthy is getting praised by his head coach, O'Connell also said that Carson did some good things in the game" and that he wishes he had been able to "gotten Max more time, but hopefully that can come here through these next two preseason games."

So, this race for Q2 is far from over.
