The San Antonio Spurs spent most of Wednesday night looking like the better team. They built a 14-point lead during the third quarter and appeared on course for a strong start to the NBA Finals. That advantage disappeared quickly. New York stormed back, seized momentum, and closed out a 105 95 victory to grab a 1 0 series lead.
As the Spurs searched for answers afterward, Victor Wembanyama started with himself.
"I was bad tonight. It's not more complicated than that," Wembanyama said.
His numbers still stood out. Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks in his Finals debut. He became only the fourth player since blocks became an official statistic in 1974 to record that combination in a first Finals appearance. Yet the performance never felt complete.
The reason was simple. San Antonio never established the interior pressure it needed. New York won the battle in the paint, 50 42, and turned extra opportunities into 23 second-chance points. Wembanyama also committed six turnovers and missed 15 shots, both postseason career highs.
Coach Mitch Johnson believed the Spurs must do a better job putting their star in positions to attack the rim.
"I agree with the coach," Wembanyama said. "Every team guards differently. I'm going to figure it out."
Even with those issues, San Antonio still put itself in a position to win. Wembanyama made a free throw with 2 16 remaining to give the Spurs a 95 94 lead. Instead of closing the game, they watched New York finish on an 11 0 run.
That sequence left the biggest impression on Wembanyama.
"We let them get an offensive rebound, so that's on us," he said.
The late collapse explained why no one in the Spurs locker room sounded discouraged. Players pointed to missed opportunities rather than major concerns.
"It was great while it lasted, but we're ready for the next chapter," Devin Vassell said.
Wembanyama dismissed the Game 1 loss, confidently guaranteeing a significant turnaround for both himself and the team. He stated that the young Spurs understand how to address their self-inflicted mistakes for the remainder of the series.
