Victor Wembanyama believes the Spurs improved because they know each other's strengths

Before the 2025-26 season started, the San Antonio Spurs were coming off a campaign in which they were firmly outside the postseason. Of course, Victor Wembanyama missed a lot of time because of a blood clot, which ruined their season.

Now, the Spurs are second in the Western Conference just behind the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. That is already an achievement, but they keep developing into a much better team across the board.

Wembanyama and the Spurs know their biggest strengths

Now that the Spurs are true contenders, people want to know the secrets behind their success. It is not an accident that they are such a great team now because they have worked on their skill sets well before the season.

With Wembanyama leading the way, everyone is motivated to be at their best. This includes a rookie like Dylan Harper and a veteran like Harrison Barnes. Across the board, the Spurs have improved, which is a good sign moving forward.

Wembanyama might be the headliner, but he will always be the first person to credit his teammates. He knows that their success is not only because of him, but it is also because of the rest of the team.

"We're improving the most, I would say, using each other's strengths. I think it shows because often it's a different guy on the team who shines. One day, it can be Keldon, it can be Dylan, it can be Steph, like today. I would say the thing we got better at was learning each other’s strengths," Wembanyama said after their win against Milwaukee.

Everyone on the Spurs roster knows each other's strengths. That is a good sign because they know how to play against most teams. When they want a slasher, they can give the ball to De'Aaron Fox or Stephon Castle.

If they need someone on the wing to contribute, they have Keldon Johnson or Julian Champagnie. The team is filled to the brim with talent, and head coach Mitch Johnson knows how to utilize them all within the system.
