Earlier this offseason, there were some rumblings that Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was thinking about retirement and was potentially even close to stepping away after the 2026 season.
However, that wasn't the case.
Vic Fangio wasn't close to retiring, still has a couple of years left in him
Fangio, 67, recently revealed that he wasn't close to retiring over the offseason. Additionally, he doesn't have any plans to walk away from the sideline any time soon.
"No, I wasn't close. I've had those thoughts the last few years. Every year at the end of the year I just think about it. I never really got serious to where I would have done it, and it was no different than I did after the '24 season, after the '23 season," Fangio said. "I told the players the other day that we had our annual physical — we get physicals as coaches — and the docs told me I was reverse aging with my lab work and everything that came up. So, I told them, 'You guys are stuck with me for a while, a long while.'
"I still like doing it," Fangio added. "I like the group of guys we have. I like working with them. I still like the challenge of the job. Work for a good organization. It's just something I think you'll always think about at the end of the year. But in the end, I didn't come close to doing it, and I really don't foresee myself doing it [any time soon]. I'm good for two years at least."
This is music to the ears of Eagles fans who have come to revere Fangio during his two seasons in Philadelphia, which included a victory in Super Bowl LIX.
The offensive coordinator position has been a revolving door for Philadelphia, so the fact that they'll have some continuity on the defensive side of the ball is a plus.
After losing in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs last season, Fangio and the Eagles will look to bounce back in 2026.
