USMNT lineup vs. Chile: Adri Mehmeti starts as Mauricio Pochettino rings the changes

The United States men look to begin the 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle with a winning streak as they take on Chile in an international friendly from St. Louis on Tuesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino led the side to a dominant 4-1 victory over Peru on the weekend to begin a lengthy four-game international break that extends between September and October.

The match not only saw the USMNT control the run of play throughout most of the 90 minutes, but they did so with 11 different debutants sprinkled into the teamsheet between the starting lineup and substitutes off the bench. One of those was 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who turned 17 over the weekend.

Now, they move on to fellow CONMEBOL side Chile, ranked 49th in the world by FIFA and coming off a 2026 cycle where they failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino has once again turned to an extremely young lineup against Chile, and one that has a distinct lack of width. It will be on Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson to provide the attacking impetus up the flanks, as Gio Reyna tucks inside to help with the ball progression.

The most exciting player in the starting lineup is Adri Mehmeti, the 17-year-old New York Red Bulls midfielder who has scouts thrilled about his future. He starts alongside fellow teenager Brooklyn Raines in midfield, with Sebastian Berhalter aiding them in the middle of the pitch.

Cavan Sullivan is amongst the substitutes for the USMNT in this match against Chile, alongside veterans Tyler Adams and Chris Richards.

The healthy scratch for this game is Diego Kochen, the young goalkeeper who made his USMNT debut in the second half against Peru but will not appear in this match.
