Notre Dame vs. Ohio State expert pick: Consider Irish QB Riley Leonard in prop bets

Betting analyst Tony Mejia has Notre Dame signal-caller Riley Leonard circled for some prop bets.

"Notre Dame has been able to overcome key injuries on both sides of the ball in this run to the title game, a testament to its resiliency," Tony writes. "RB Jeremiyah Love found the end zone and ran for 46 yards on 11 carries vs. Penn State, and QB Riley Leonard pitched in with 35 yards on 18 carries in addition to a rushing score, overcoming two interceptions.

"Love's knee should be feeling a little stronger, although he's unlikely to be 100 percent, so look for Leonard to keep calling his own number often. The OVER on his carries (14.5) and the YES on his TD prop (+140) look promising."

Can Notre Dame make history by upsetting Ohio State?

Over at The Lines, Brett Gibbons list the top five upsets in college football championship game history. A Notre Dame win Monday night would crack the list.

Ironically, Ohio State's victory as an 11.5-point underdog vs. Miami in 2002 ranks as the biggest upset of them all.

That season's Hurricanes team boasted "perhaps the most talented roster of all time," Gibbons writes. "Thirty-two players from this roster were drafted into the NFL. ... Though a half-step down from the 2001 Miami Hurricanes roster, this team was expected to roll.

"But Ohio State had other plans. In a wild double-overtime game – that included a highly controversial pass interference call in a critical moment – the Buckeyes prevailed, 31-24. Running back Maurice Clarett and quarterback Craig Krenzel each rushed for a pair of scores, Clarett’s second being the game-winner. ...

"The Buckeyes rose to national prominence after snapping their 32-year title drought and have returned to the national championship five times since then."

Fast-forward to 2006, when Ohio State's loss as a 7.5-point favorite to Florida ranks as the fourth-largest upset in the title game's history.

Gibbons recalls, "After Ted Ginn Jr. returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, it appeared Ohio State would roll to its second title in five years. However, Florida would tack on the following three scoring plays and hold Ohio State scoreless in the second half."

Tim Tebow came off the bench to rush for a touchdown to cap a 41-14 Gators victory. Tebow's "impact in this game was minimal, yet his legacy began that night," and he won the Heisman Trophy the following season. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, returned to the title game in 2008 and lost to LSU.
