USA vs. Mexico baseball history: U.S. beats North American neighbor in WBC for just second time ever

1 hour ago 3

The rivalry between the United States and Mexico often goes beyond baseball, or beyond sports in general, but the diamond is where both countries are at their best.

While the USA is looking like a powerhouse in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, its track record against Mexico in the tournament isn't particularly strong. Mexico has a long history of producing MLB-caliber talent, and those players reliably choose to represent the country on the world stage.

The United States' luck turned on Monday night with a 5-3 win over Mexico, but it was only the second-ever World Baseball Classic win over their neighbor to the south.

Here's a look at the history between the United States and Mexico on the diamond.

USA vs. Mexico baseball history

Best-on-best international baseball isn't nearly as common as some other sports, such as basketball or hockey, so the United States and Mexico haven't faced each other often outside of the World Baseball Classic.

The two nations have never actually faced off in the Olympics, where baseball has come and gone as an Olympic sport but never featured MLB players. One consequential matchup happened just before the Olympics, as Mexico defeated the USA in a qualifier to deny the reigning gold medalist American team the chance to compete in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

In the World Baseball Classic, a rivalry is brewing. The United States and Mexico have met five times in six WBC tournaments, and Mexico has actually gotten the better of the U.S. more often than not. Here are the results.

Mexico is now 3-2 all-time against the United States in the World Baseball Classic. Here's a look at every game they've played against each other:

Team USA's win on Monday is the nation's first over Mexico on the World Baseball Classic stage since 2006, when the two split a pair of pool play games under a slightly different format.

Mexico and the U.S. found themselves in the same pool in 2009 and 2023, but Mexico won each time, including an 11-run outburst against the Americans in 2023. Mexico's loss to Japan in the 2023 semifinals prevented a rematch in the championship game.

Are USA and Mexico rivals?

Much like in other sports, Team USA and Team Mexico should be considered rivals in the world of international baseball. They're interstate foes, after all, separated by mere miles.

Much of the present United States belonged to Mexico prior to 1848. That year, the United States and Mexico agreed to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, formally ending the Mexican-American War. Mexico was forced to cede 55 percent of its territories as well as all claims for Texas, a former Mexican territory that was subject to vicious attacks from Anglo-American settlers in the lead-up to the war.

The political and economic relationship between the United States and Mexico have continued to serve as a backdrop for the sporting rivalry. Couple that with a fierce sporting rivalry that has seen the intensity rise as the World Baseball Classic becomes more popular and you would have a hard time arguing the countries aren't intertwined.
