Team USA was nearly dealt a stunning blow in its second group stage matchup against Italy, holding off a pesky Italian bunch, 55-52, to keep its 32-game World Cup win streak intact.

It was anything but a classic showing for the Americans, who posted their lowest points tally in a World Cup match since 1971 in the contest. Kara Lawson's bunch recorded just 16 made baskets during the contest. If not for late-game heroics from Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young — and a sizable advantage at the free-throw line — Team USA could have found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard for the first time in more than half a century.

In the end, Team USA did enough to fend off the Mediterranean nation and secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Its final group stage tilt — a joust with Czechia — isn't all that consequential outside of seeding. Nevertheless, the fixture should offer a platform for players down the pecking order to get a look in.

The Czechs aren't nearly as star-laden as their adversary. They've dropped both of their World Cup games thus far, falling to China in overtime in their last outing.

Still, with a handful of EuroLeague talents scattered across their ranks and one WNBA player — Lynx guard Eliska Joklova — Czechia will fancy itself contenders to give Team USA a real contest.

The Sporting News is tracking live updates from Team USA's group stage match against the Czechs. Follow below for highlights, analysis and more from the final game of the Group D slate.
