USA soccer roster projection for 2030 World Cup: Pulisic leads USMNT's transition after 2026 exit

1 hour ago 3

The United States are out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After a strong and promising group-stage showing and a springboard performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, the U.S. fell completely flat in the Round of 16, spanked by Belgium in a disappointing 4-1 defeat.

While Mauricio Pochettino was brought in to elevate the level of the USMNT and challenge the lower-tier teams among Europe's elite, the only thing they proved is that there is still plenty of work to be done in talent development and competitive fire.

Nevertheless, with the hype around soccer in the United States close to an all-time high thanks to the overall electricity of the 2026 World Cup, it's never too early to start looking toward the next tournament four years from now. The core of the 2026 USMNT squad will start to age out of its prime soon, and a new era of talent will have to be brought in to ease the transition.

The Sporting News takes a very, very early look at what the roster could look like at the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

USMNT 2030 World Cup projected roster

Compared to the 2026 World Cup roster, the projected 2030 roster doesn't look too different, but four years is an eternity for professional athletes.

Injuries and form can significantly alter the makeup of a World Cup roster, even over the course of a single year, let alone a full four-year cycle.

Additionally, the development of talent, as well as the emergence of new players, over that time span can drastically change the look of a squad. For example, nobody would have had Alex Freeman on the USMNT roster for the 2026 World Cup even two years before the start of the tournament, let alone back in 2022, yet here he is, not only on the team but in the starting lineup.

Below is a very early projected roster for the 2030 World Cup, considering the age of those currently in the player pool and those believed to emerge as contenders in the coming years.

Position breakdown for USMNT 2030 World Cup roster

Goalkeeper

  • Holdover: Matt Freese
  • Added: Jonathan Klinsmann, Diego Kochen
  • In the mix: Chris Brady (26), Roman Celentano (29), Duran Ferree (23), Patrick Schulte (29), Gaga Slonina (26)
  • Aging out: Matt Turner (36)

The goalkeeping position will be one to watch over the next four years. With Matt Turner set to be 36 years old by the next World Cup and overtaken by 2026 World Cup scapegoat Matt Freese as the starter, there will be a battle for the future of this position at the national team.

Young duo Diego Kochen and Gaga Slonina will make a play for the spot, with both needing to secure game time at the club level over the next four years if they want to make a push. Another youth international that could be brought along is Duran Ferree, who has blossomed into the starter for San Diego FC in the 2026 MLS season. There will be plenty to develop over the next four years at this position.

Center-back

  • Holdover: Chris Richards, Auston Trusty
  • Added: Noahkai Banks, Cameron Carter-Vickers, George Campbell
  • In the mix: Brandan Craig (26), Jalen Neal (26), Nolan Norris (25), Mark McKenzie (31), Josh Wynder (25)
  • Aging out: Tim Ream (42), Miles Robinson (33)

The biggest position of need for the USMNT both now and in the future is center-back, where there is a ton of turnover and not much exciting talent coming through the pipeline. A closer look at the talent pool in play for the 2030 World Cup leaves a lot to be desired.

The one player with big potential who could make a play for national team minutes soon is Noahkai Banks, but for that to happen the federation must convince the Hawaiian-born defender to represent the United States over Germany. 2026 captain Tim Ream is 38 years old and will surely be retired come the 2030 tournament, so he will need replacing.

Josh Wynder of the Benfica youth team could make a play for a role here if he can push for senior minutes at the Portuguese giants in the next year or two.

Full-back

  • Holdover: Sergino Dest, Alex Freeman, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally
  • Added: None
  • In the mix: Max Arfsten (29), Reed Baker-Whiting (25), Luca Bombino (23), Tate Johnson (24), Kristoffer Lund (28), Peyton Miller (22), John Tolkin (27), Frankie Westfield (24)
  • Aging out: None

There will be lots of discussion about the full-back position over the next four years, mainly as Antonee Robinson progresses to a critical age. Jedi will be 32 come the 2030 World Cup, and he's already been dealing with significant knee injuries now in his prime. It's possible he will not be a viable starter four years from now, meaning left-back will be a position of need. Even if Jedi is still a starter by then, the full-back position will need much better depth than it has now.

Thankfully, there are a bunch of young up-and-coming American full-backs in MLS that could develop into contenders for this spot. At San Diego FC, Luca Bombino has already developed into a starter on the left at 19 years old, while 21-year-old Reed Baker-Whiting has youth national team experience and 20-year-old Frankie Westfield is capable on both flanks for Philadelphia at 20. We'll see if any of them pan out further to become national team options.

Midfield

  • Holdover: Tyler Adams, Sebastian Berhalter, Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman
  • Added: Johnny Cardoso, Rokas Pukstas, Cavan Sullivan, Tanner Tessmann
  • In the mix: Taha Habroune (24), Aidan Morris (28), Rokas Puskas (25), Brooklyn Rains (25), Gio Reyna (27), James Sands (29), Luca de la Torre (32), Niko Tsakiris (25)
  • Aging out: Cristian Roldan (35)

Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Malik Tillman have formed the bedrock of the USMNT midfield at the 2026 World Cup. In 2030, Tillman will be in the prime of his career at 28 years old, but Adams and McKennie will both be over 30. Unless injuries take hold early, both should still be a solid option for the U.S. but it will be dicey over the next four years to see how they hold up.

The big addition here is Cavan Sullivan, who is easily the most-hyped young USMNT prospect since Christian Pulisic. At 16 years old, he has already agreed to a future transfer to Premier League giants Manchester City, which will officially take place once he turns 18 and can legally work in England. If his development goes as expected, he should be a cornerstone of this team four years from now. Watch for him to star in the U.S. Olympic team on home soil in 2028.

Another name to watch here is Rokas Pukstas, currently contracted to Croatian club Hajduk Split. At 21 years old, Puskas has already become a regular for the first team, scoring nine goals and assisting four more in the 2025/26 season. He can play both attacking midfield and out wide on the right, making him a prime option for the national team, especially if he gets a move to a bigger league. With Gio Reyna still yet to gain a firm foothold at the club level, the next four years will again be filled with conversation of whether he deserves to be part of the squad, and unless he can gain some club stability, he could be pipped by Pukstas at 27 years old.

Winger

  • Holdover: Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah
  • Added: Cole Campbell
  • In the mix: Brenden Aaronson (29), Dylan Borso (24), Diego Luna (26), Zavier Gozo (23), Alejandro Zendejas (32)
  • Aging out: None

Christian Pulisic, the current star of the 2026 USMNT squad, will be 31 by the time the 2030 World Cup comes around. While he should still be an electric player, and probably a starter, he may not have the same pop he does right now at the peak of his prime.

Thankfully, the American connection at Borussia Dortmund continues to churn out talent, with Cole Campbell starting to prove his worth at 20 years old and could be the next attacking star if his development in Germany continues. 19-year-old Zavier Gozo has exploded to the forefront at Real Salt Lake, so much that there was some chatter he could earn a late call-up for the 2026 tournament, and he is likely to get a chance over the next few years.

Another name to keep in mind is dynamic attacker Dylan Borso, who was one-and-done at Wake Forest before signing a homegrown contract with the Chicago Fire, where he has yet to break through into the first team.

Striker

  • Holdover: Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi
  • Added: Damion Downs
  • In the mix: Patrick Agyemang (29), Josh Sargent (30), Haji Wright (32), Darren Yapi (25)
  • Aging out: None

If you told a USMNT fan back in 2024 that striker would be one of the most settled positions in the USMNT player pool as the 2026 World Cup cycle turned to 2030, they wouldn't believe you. Yet that's the case right now, as 24-year-old Folarin Balogun and 23-year-old Ricardo Pepi have the position on lock and are trending upwards at both the club and international levels.

Behind them, there is even more talent. 21-year-old Damion Downs is on the rise and believed to be a major factor by the time 2030 comes around, while late-bloomers Patrick Agyemang and Haji Wright could still be an option four years from now.
