What is the USA's best finish at a FIFA World Cup?
Officially, the best finish for the United States was at the 1930 FIFA World Cup, where they finished third at the very first tournament.
However, that is largely discounted when discussing this question, for a few reasons. First and foremost, the 1930 World Cup was not a merit-based tournament, as it was invite-only with the international version of the sport still in its infancy. Only 13 teams participated in the very first World Cup.
If we only look at the modern version of the World Cup — i.e. ones with merit-based qualification as well as both a group stage and a knockout stage — their best finish is a quarterfinal appearance in 2002.

USA record in knockout stage of FIFA World Cup
The United States has only ever won one knockout game in its time at the FIFA World Cup.
This came in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when the USMNT defeated Mexico 2-0 in the Round of 16. The two goal scorers in that game were Brian McBride and a 20-year-old Landon Donovan.
It sent the United States to the Round of 16 for their first and only time in a modern World Cup, where they lost to Germany in highly controversial fashion.
Overall, they have won one and lost seven knockout games in their World Cup history. The U.S. has suffered from terrible luck in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.
In 1994, they went toe-to-toe with Brazil on home soil until Leonardo clobbered Tab Ramos in the face with a vicious elbow. The Brazil player was shown a red card, putting the U.S. a man up, but they had lost their best creative player and could no longer effectively attack the Brazil back line.
In 2002, after beating Mexico in their lone knockout stage victory, they were again in a great position to challenge Germany in the quarterfinals, but the referee completely missed a handball on the goal line by Torsten Frings, which prevented a USA goal, with Germany moving on to win.
In 2010, the U.S. seemed set up against Ghana, a team ranked lower than them, in the Round of 16. But their hearts were broken early in extra time as Asamoah Gyan scored in the 93rd minute to win the game before the U.S. could get it to a penalty shootout.
In 2014, the United States got an all-time performance from Tim Howard in goal against Belgium, logging the most saves by a goalkeeper ever in a World Cup match. But with starting striker Jozy Altidore out injured, backup Chris Wondolowski missed a guilt-edged chance at the end of regulation to win the match, and the U.S. would lose in extra time.
