The Dallas Mavericks are in search of a new arena before 2031, because they will not renew their contract with the American Airlines Center. The plan is to build a large complex, even including a 4- or 5-star hotel, according to reports.
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts was recently hired specifically to lead the new arena project, as he previously did with the Golden State Warriors and the Chase Center.
According to Dallas CBS News, the franchise is looking for about "50 acres" of land in the city, but they are having complications. Apparently, they are having difficulty finding a space of that size, especially in downtown.
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts leading project as Irving option remains complicated
The Mavericks already own a piece of land linked to the Sands Corp. in Irving, and initially, it was believed the new venue would be built there. However, there are legal complications related to gambling that make it difficult to attach a casino to an arena in Texas.
There is a site where the City Hall is currently located that could be an option. The team must be certain whether it will be there in the coming months to begin planning and construction.
The Mavericks' priority is to remain a Dallas team, with the city on their jersey. Even so, they acknowledge that there is very little space available within the city limits, given their plan to build a large-scale arena.
Irving is one of the most likely options, since they already have land there and, therefore, would have more freedom to design a project to their liking.
