Ukraine Says It Hit Power Substations in Russia-Annexed Crimea

(Bloomberg) — Ukraine said it attacked 16 substations in Crimea and and other Russian-occupied regions over the past 48 hours, deepening an energy crisis in and around the Black Sea peninsula.

The attack was confirmed by Robert Brovdi, Ukraine’s commander of unmanned forces, in a Telegram post on Sunday. Power stations were hit in Crimea as well as the Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Ukraine’s General Staff said in a separate statement that a military airfield was also attacked in Crimea.

The administration of Yevpatoriya, a city of about 100,000 residents in western Crimea, reported power outages without elaborating on the cause, according to RBC media. In northern Crimea, one person was killed as a result of attack and two others were injured overnight, Kremlin-appointed governor Sergei Aksenov said on Telegram.

Separately, Russia’ Defense Ministry said in a statement that it intercepted a total of 282 drones, nine guided aerial bombs and one Neptune-MD long-range guided missile overnight. Russia’s Armed Forces also carried out strikes against military airfields, infrastructure facilities and production sites for long-range drones on Ukrainian territory, Interfax reported, citing the ministry.

The exchange of attacks takes place ahead of NATO summit in Turkey which is scheduled for the upcoming week.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on Saturday with US President Donald Trump ahead of the NATO meeting, which Trump plans to attend, the Kremlin said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke with Trump.
