UConn March Madness record: How Huskies' NCAA Tournament success has reached historic levels

1 hour ago 3

March can be unpredictable, but the golden rule may be simple: when UConn is in the NCAA Tournament, it likely won't be a short stay.

The Huskies carved up the rest of the field in 2023 and 2024 to win back-to-back national championships, and despite some questions entering this year's tournament, they have reached the second weekend again under coach Dan Hurley.

UConn's bafflingly strong March Madness record dates back to the Jim Calhoun era, when the Huskies similarly made the most of their opportunities in March.

Here's a look at UConn's recent record in the NCAA Tournament, including their record under Hurley.

UConn record in March Madness

UConn is 74-33 (.692) all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which is impressive in itself, but the Huskies have been a different animal since their first appearance under Calhoun in 1990. UConn is 71-19 (.789) since 1990, with seven Final Four appearances and six national championships. That spells out a remarkable stat as well, as UConn is 12-1 in between Final Four and national championship games.

Dating back to their 2014 national title run, the Huskies are now 23-4 over their last 27 games in the NCAA Tournament.

Since 2009, UConn has either been eliminated before the Sweet 16 or won the national championship in all of its March Madness appearances. The last time the Huskies were eliminated after the second round was all the way back in 2009, when they lost in the Final Four.

The success has kept up under Hurley. While it actually took five years for Hurley to win an NCAA Tournament game at UConn, the Huskies are now 15-3 (.833) under their current head coach, considerably better than Hurley's 180-71 (.717) record in non-NCAA Tournament games with the program.

It's been all-or-nothing for Hurley in March, which is a good sign for Huskies fans after UConn started this tournament with back-to-back wins. It's the third time Hurley has reached the Sweet 16, and the previous two instances each ended with a national championship.
