Speculating what the Alabama Crimson Tide will be like under Kalen DeBoer in Year 2 remains up for debate, mainly because DeBoer has still been holding back his decision of naming the team’s next starting QB.
Even if the answer is obvious.
Ty Simpson is the undeniable hot favorite, but DeBoer will take his sweet time in making it official.
However, ex-Alabama QB AJ McCarron, and someone who has trained Simpson as a high-school QB, is convinced that the writing is on the wall: the Crimson Tide’s starting role is Simpson’s to lose.
“I think it’s his job to lose, not only from an experience standpoint.
“I think he has a ton of talent. I’ve worked with Ty, have trained with him in the past, even when he was a young pup coming out of high school,” McCarron said on The Dynasty.
There’s no denying that Simpson is most likely to get the starting role. Alabama OC Ryan Grubb made it clear that were the season were to start from Saturday, Simpson would be their starter.
“I think he has a ton of arm talent. He can make every throw on the field. I think he’s very underrated using his feet as well, being able to escape the pocket when he needs to or throw into zone-read when you lull the defense to sleep and they’re thinking you’re handing it off to Jam Miller, and all of a sudden you pull it and bust around the edge. He has plenty of talent to go out there, win this job, and keep it.”
Keeping everyone in limbo might be a mastermind move from DeBoer, though.
It sends out a clear message to the QB room to continue improving on their skills, despite someone having a clear upper hand.
In other words, the ones who don’t have an upper hand may get there with consistency.
In all, their QB room doesn’t slack and continues to sharpen their skills.
A lot will depend on who leads the Tide’s offense in 2025.
We’ll see whether this thoroughly thought decision of DeBoer will deliver to the college football playoff expectations this season.
