Ty Simpson gets reality check after impressive Rams debut

1 hour ago 3

There's no getting around the reality that Ty Simpson had a fantastic NFL debut with the Los Angeles Rams.

The rookie quarterback totally rocked it in his preseason debut on Saturday, leading the Rams to a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in three quarters of the game and finished 21-of-25 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns. He also had no interceptions.

Those are great numbers, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Following Simpson's big game, there were quite a few hyperbolic comments about the quarterback, and now, he's being brought back to reality.

In a piece out on Monday, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report rattles off a slew of overreactions after the preseason debuts. One is that Simpson is the best of the best.

Hold Your Horses on Los Angeles Rams Quarterback Ty Simpson

"Apparently, Ty Simpson has leapfrogged Fernando Mendoza as QB1 in the 2026 class with his impressive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs," he jokes.

He adds, "Take nothing away from Simpson. He picked apart the Chiefs defense, but the rookie did that against a unit without its best pass-rushers."

It's a sure bet that Simpson will learn and thrive under Sean McVay, one of the NFL's best offensive-minded coaches. He'll grow. But, as Moton smartly points out, don't start giving this guy too many props until he's playing in the regular season against first-stringers.

Plus, there's a much better chance Mendoza will be doing that first, since Matthew Stafford is fully locked in for the 2026-27 season.
