The Alabama Crimson Tide look primed for a College Football Playoff run in 2025. In head coach Kalen DeBoer's second season, a big reason for the Tide's success is the play of quarterback Ty Simpson, who is a candidate for the Heisman Trophy.

Simpson has been at Alabama since 2022 and was a backup to both Jalen Milroe and Bryce Young. Despite spending most of his time at Tuscaloosa as a backup, he's quite comfortable in the starting role.

Simpson's family includes a college football coach dad, athlete siblings and more. Let's take a look at Simpson's family, hometown, roots and more.

Ty Simpson dad: Jason Simpson

Ty Simpson grew up around the sport of football — his father is Jason Simpson, the current head coach of UT-Martin. The Skyhawks play at the FCS level in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Jason Simpson has been the head coach of the Skyhawks since 2006 and has compiled a 127-97 record over his 21 seasons as head coach. With the Skyhawks, he has won five OVC conference titles in 2006, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Although his dad isn't able to make it to most of his son's games because of his coaching schedule, he was able to watch his son help defeat Tennessee, 37-20.

UT-Martin had a game Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. earlier that day.

“I’m going to try not to get emotional, but it meant a lot,” Ty said after the game. “He literally coached a game at 12:30 in North Carolina. Then made an effort to come to my game and be with my family. He means the world to me.”

“For him to be able to watch me play when sometimes he can’t,” Ty Simpson said, “that’s my best friend.”

Jason Simpson started his coaching career as an assistant at Jacksonville State, Texas State and Chattanooga. As a player, he played quarterback for Mississippi State for two years, playing baseball for the Bulldogs, as well. He also played baseball for Southern Miss for two seasons.

“Good players have to wait their turn,” Simpson said of his son waiting to get his shot at Alabama via the Jackson Sun. “As the dad, you're wishing that you could help fix stuff for him, but as a coach, you know you can't, and it’s something he’s gotta deal with on his own.”

Ty Simpson mom: Julie Simpson

Ty Simpson's mother is Julie Simpson, and she is often spotted at her son's games. She has talked in the past about the Simpson family juggling seeing her son play and Ty's father's games. Via WPSD

"It's not easy," Julie said. "But I would not have it any other way. The only thing I would change is if Ty could play during the day, and the Skyhawks at night."

At that same time, just outside of St. Louis, MO, her husband Jason was busy coaching UT Martin in their conference game against Lindenwood.

"We have been living like this for four years now," Jason said. "The family goes and watches Ty. So, we know how to manage that. I'd like to say that nothing has changed over the years, but that is not totally the case right."

His mom was spotted greeting her son after his huge victory over Georgia earlier this season, where he finished with three total touchdowns:

“He’s loved this game since he was a little bitty boy,” Julie Simpson said after the game via The Jackson Sun. “He grew up in the locker room and on the field, and to watch him go out there and play and do it like he’s always dreamed of … And he waited so patiently and knew he could do it. It was just a huge blessing.”

Ty Simpson brother: Graham Simpson

Ty Simpson has a younger brother, Graham, who appears to be following in his older brother's footsteps. Graham plays quarterback where his brother Ty played in high school, at Westview in Martin, Tenn.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Graham is a three-star quarterback prospect from the class of 2028. He ranks as the No. 9 overall signal-caller from 2028, and already has offers from the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Auburn and several other schools.

As a true freshman in 2024, he threw for 2,752 yards with 43 touchdowns and zero interceptions, completing 77.2 percent of his passes. He was named the MaxPreps freshman of the year for 2024.

Ty Simpson sister: Emma Simpson

Ty Simpson's younger sister, Emma, played basketball for Westview in high school where she finished out her senior year in 2023-24. She tore her ACL twice but actually decided to play through the injury during her senior season. Via Gibson County News

"We sat down with her parents and talked about it for an hour with what the doctors were saying, what the trainers were saying and what former players with this said,” [her coach Brian ] Haskins said. “We were all on the same page that we wanted it to be her decision, but we wanted it to be an educated decision. Dr. Vance told her that there were risks that came with it, so do the rewards outweigh the risks? She works so hard. One of the hardest working kids that we have.”

But Simpson had her mind set on being on the court, and that is exactly what happened.

Simpson has played throughout the first half of the season for Westview. How much time she gets depends on how strong her leg feels.

Simpson scored 177 points in 64 games during her Martin career. She also played softball in high school, and is now a student at UT-Martin.

She has talked about how her brother struggled to wait for his turn at Alabama.

“It was really hard to talk to him because I could see and hear how much he was hurting," Emma said via The Jackson Sun. "But that might’ve been the best thing that could've happened to him.”
