Tua Tagovailoa gets bad news after signing with Falcons to join Michael Penix Jr.

Tua Tagovailoa has a new home with the Atlanta Falcons.

But does he have a new starting QB job? Michael Penix Jr. will have plenty to say about that.

The reality is that Tagovailoa may not be a shoo-in to be the QB1 in Atlanta.

In a new article on Monday, ESPN's Dan Graziano shares that Tagovailoa's path won't be a simple one.

"The Atlanta story is different; my sense is the Falcons view Penix as the starter once he's healthy and Tagovailoa is just there for coverage in case he isn't ready," Graziano writes.

Penix is coming off a season-ending knee injury, and he's got a history of such injuries, so there's at least some risk there.

New head coach Kevin Stefanski and front office leader Matt Ryan decided that Tagovailoa was the right guy to bring in to join Penix while also releasing Kirk Cousins.

Tagovailoa and Penix are both left-handed QBs, which can make things quite a bit easier operationally as opposed to having a starter and backup who throw from opposite sides.

The end of Tagovailoa's days with the Dolphins was not great, and he'll have to prove himself again.

With the Falcons, he'll get at least some opportunity to show what he still has in the tank, but it might be less chance than some might assume.

Penix still has a say in this quarterback picture. Tagovailoa will, too. It'll be a fascinating depth chart to watch as the season approaches, and even once it's underway.
