(Bloomberg) — Donald Trump signaled he would meet with Republicans interested in challenging Thom Tillis for his Senate seat after the North Carolina Republican opposed the president’s tax bill.

Tillis, one of the most vulnerable Republicans up for reelection in 2026, opposed cuts to Medicaid and clean energy plants in Trump’s signature legislation.

“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” Trump posted on Truth Social late Saturday. “I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”

Tillis told reporters earlier Saturday that he had spoken with Trump recently and explained his reasoning for opposing the bill.

“I’ve never had a bad discussion with this president in spite of the fact that he and I have disagreed with each other,” Tillis said. “It’s been very, very professional and very respectful.”

Trump’s support could sway the GOP primary away from Tillis in a state that has become increasingly a toss-up. Such a move could create an opening for Democrats in the general election.

Trump’s threat is his latest effort to unseat Republicans who disagree with him.

Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who did not vote for the House version of the tax bill, has been called a “negative force” and a “simple minded grandstander” by Trump.

Massie said he opposed the House version because it did not cut enough spending.

The Senate held open a key procedural vote on Trump’s tax bill late Saturday night as leaders and Vice President JD Vance pressured reluctant Republicans to back it. Tillis had already voted against the motion when Trump targeted him on social media.
