Aaron Szabo told staff in a meeting on Tuesday that he is planning to leave his position as assistant administrator at the Office of Air and Radiation later this month and did not cite a reason, according to an EPA employee who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters. Szabo did not immediately respond to a request for comment but the agency confirmed his departure.

Szabo has served as Trump’s top air regulator for about a year, overseeing some of the agency’s most aggressive policy rollbacks. Under his watch, the EPA formally rescinded the endangerment finding, a landmark scientific determination that climate change poses a threat to human health and welfare. Multiple state attorneys general and environmental groups have sued the agency over the repeal. Szabo’s office also led the EPA’s work to nix climate standards for cars and trucks and its proposal to relax other pollution standards for vehicles.

“We are grateful for Aaron Szabo’s tireless work,” said EPA spokesperson Brigit Hirsch, who added that Szabo’s team “has been responsible for saving Americans trillions of dollars by cutting unnecessary red tape.” The agency did not respond to questions about who will replace him in the Senate-confirmed role.

Before joining the EPA, Szabo was a lobbyist for the energy and chemical industries and other clients. He has held previous roles in the federal government, most recently as senior counsel in the White House Council on Environmental Quality under the first Trump administration.

Szabo’s former deputy Alexander Dominguez resigned earlier this year, according to the agency employee. A message to his EPA email address bounced back. Neither Dominguez nor the EPA immediately responded to questions about his departure.
