Trump has been furious with Canada ever since the province of Ontario began airing an ad using an old Ronald Reagan radio address to criticize his tariff regime. He’s accused Canada — and Carney — of seeking to influence the US Supreme Court, which is set to hear arguments about the legality of his use of levies on foreign goods next week.

The spat culminated in Trump announcing his intention to slap an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods as he traveled to Asia. Since arriving, he’s made his annoyance with his neighbor to the North — and its leader — plain for all to see.

“I don’t want to meet with him,” Trump said on Monday. “No, I’m not going to be meeting with them for a while. I’m very happy with the deal we have right now with Canada. We’re going to let it ride.”

Despite Trump’s anger, Carney still retained an invite to a dinner held in the US president’s honor Wednesday night on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju. The event was hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who has spent most of the day courting Trump.

Trump and Carney were seated across an eight-person table from one another, joined by Lee and the leaders of Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.

Carney, for his part, has tried to downplay the tension with Trump. Earlier in the week, he told reporters in Malaysia that Canada was “ready when appropriate” to pick up trade talks.

“We’re ready to sit down when they’re ready to do that,” Carney said, adding that the two countries had recently made “considerable progress in the areas of steel, aluminum and energy” — to the point that term sheets were being exchanged.

Trump hasn’t specified how the tax increase would apply, and Carney said his government hasn’t been given any further details.

Trump also said he wasn’t swayed by learning that the ad was funded by Ontario rather than the federal government.

“The prime minister knew,” he said. “Everybody knew.”
