Trump delivers shocking response to Andrew Cuomo’s independent bid for mayor against ‘communist’ Mamdani

President Trump said Tuesday that ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo should stay in New York City’s mayoral race — despite his embarrassing defeat in the Democratic primary to “communist” Zohran Mamdani.

“I think he should stay,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn when asked about Cuomo’s newly relaunched campaign as an independent. “I think he has a shot.”

The shocking vote of confidence came despite Mayor Eric Adams, who has repeatedly cozied up to Trump, also vying for re-election on an independent line in the general race.

Adams has attacked Cuomo for staying in the race, claiming that he alone should be the one to take on Mamdani in November.

But Trump doubled down, saying, “I think Andrew [Cuomo] would have a good shot.”

“He’s got to run a good campaign,” Trump continued. “You know, he’s running against a communist.”

The president added:  “I don’t think that race is over yet, we do have a couple of people running. There are things coming out about him [Mamdani].”

He notably did not mention Adams when asked who he would support, telling reporters, “I don’t want to say,”

Trump’s interim US Attorney in Washington DC — Jeanine Pirro, who is a longtime adversary of Cuomo after running against him for New York attorney general — is reportedly investigating the ex-gov for allegedly lying to Congress.
