Trey Songz Avoids Jail in Times Square Nightclub Fight Case

Trey Songz won’t serve any jail time on his arrest for allegedly punching a man at a Times Square nightclub last year.

The singer (born Tremaine Neverson) was sentenced in New York court on Wednesday (July 22) to one year of conditional discharge for a non-criminal violation of second-degree harassment. This outcome, first reported by Billboard, means Songz won’t be subject to jail time or probation as long as he remains law-abiding for the next year.

Songz was arrested in December over two separate incidents in Manhattan. In the first, he was charged with harassment and misdemeanor attempted assault after prosecutors claimed he punched a man in the face at the Times Square club DRAMMA. In the second, he faced a felony count of criminal mischief for allegedly destroying more than $1,500 worth of hookahs, DJ equipment and sofas at the midtown hookah lounge Mira.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office later agreed to drop the felony count after defense lawyer Mitchell Schuster argued that other aggressors, not Songz, were responsible for the damage at Mira. Schuster also told Billboard that the damage caused by these other individuals was “significantly less than initially reported to law enforcement.”

As for the DRAMMA incident, Songz initially pleaded guilty in April to both assault and harassment. But after completing mental health treatment and abiding by court-ordered conditions, the DA’s office says, Songz was permitted Wednesday to withdraw the misdemeanor plea and remain convicted only of harassment, a non-criminal violation.

“We are very pleased with this resolution,” Schuster told Billboard on Thursday (July 23).

Songz, best known for the early 2000s hits “Say Aah” and “Bottoms Up,” has faced numerous criminal probes over the years for physical violence. The singer pleaded guilty in 2017 to punching a police officer after a concert at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, and he was arrested in 2021 over an altercation at the 2021 AFC Championship Game in Kansas City. Prosecutors ultimately declined to charge him over the Kansas City incident, and he later filed a wrongful arrest lawsuit.

Multiple women have also accused Songz of sexual assault, which he denies. Songz has settled various civil lawsuits, including one alleging the singer assaulted a woman while dancing at a Miami nightclub in 2018.
