Trey Murphy III remains an appealing trade target for Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks may not be finished reshaping their roster this offseason, and one name that continues to surface in league circles is New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III.

Atlanta has reportedly monitored Murphy’s situation for some time, viewing the 6-foot-8 wing as an ideal fit alongside Jalen Johnson and the Hawks’ young core. While New Orleans has consistently valued Murphy highly, Atlanta possesses the type of assets that could make future trade discussions intriguing.

The Hawks own multiple future first-round draft picks and have several tradeable contracts that could be used to construct a competitive offer. Atlanta has emphasized maintaining financial flexibility while adding versatile players who can contribute on both ends of the floor.

Murphy has developed into one of the NBA’s most promising young wings since entering the league. During the 2025-26 season, he averaged 21.5 points per game while shooting efficiently from the field and beyond the arc. His combination of elite three-point shooting, athleticism, length, and defensive versatility makes him one of the league’s most coveted young forwards.

For Atlanta, Murphy would address one of the team’s biggest needs. The Hawks have searched for a dependable two-way wing capable of defending multiple positions while providing consistent perimeter scoring. Murphy checks each of those boxes and would fit seamlessly into head coach Quin Snyder’s system.

Adding Murphy would also lessen the offensive burden on Johnson while creating additional spacing for Atlanta’s playmakers. His ability to run the floor, finish above the rim, and knock down catch-and-shoot opportunities would complement the Hawks’ up-tempo style.

Whether New Orleans is willing to entertain offers remains the biggest obstacle. Murphy has become a foundational piece for the Pelicans, making any trade difficult to complete.

Still, with Atlanta armed with future first-round picks, movable salaries, and an aggressive front office, the Hawks appear positioned to pursue impact talent whenever an opportunity arises. If Murphy ever becomes available, Atlanta is expected to be among the first teams to make a serious call.
