Trey Hendrickson contract update contradicts Bengals' optimism: 'Atrociously low'

The Cincinnati Bengals report to training camp on Tuesday, and superstar edge rusher Trey Hendrickson will not be there.

Hendrickson told ESPN's Adam Schefter that he will not show up for the start of Bengals' training camp as contract negotiations between the two sides are still in a rough spot.

Along with Schefter's report, Hendrickson confirmed that he won't be at camp, as the All-Pro defender posted a picture of a highway with the location of Florida on his Instagram story on Tuesday morning.

Based on a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Tuesday, it seems like Cincinnati and Hendrickson tried to get something done, but couldn't in time for the start of camp. Schultz added that both sides are frustrated and there isn't a clear resolution yet.

"Sources: The Bengals and All-Pro DE Trey Hendrickson made attempts over the past few days to reengage on a new deal, but talks failed to gain serious momentum," Schultz wrote on X.

"Both sides are dug in and frustrated. I’m told there are key differences between the two sides, and there’s currently no clear path to a resolution."

Schefter added that guaranteed money remains an issue in negotiations. Hendrickson wants multiple years of guaranteed money, but the Bengals are only offering one year.

"This is an issue revolving around guaranteed money; the Bengals have been willing to offer only one year of it while other top pass rushers - Maxx Crosby, Myles Garrett, TJ Watt - have gotten three," Schefter wrote on X.

Additionally, Good Morning Football host Manti Te'o stated that he spoke to Hendrickson regarding the guarantees in Cincinnati's contract offer, and the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher called them 'atrociously low.'

"They are atrociously, atrociously low," Hendrickson said to Te'o.

We'll see if Cincinnati can eventually lock down their standout pass rusher on a long-term deal. However, Hendrickson's future with the franchise has never looked more bleak.
