Coming into the NFL, there were high hopes, and high expectations for Trevor Lawrence. However, four-and-a-half seasons into his career, he’s yet to fully live up to those expectations. As a result, he was recently named one of the most overrated quarterbacks in the league by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report.
“Trevor Lawrence came into the NFL with a huge amount of hype,” Kay wrote. “The No. 1 overall pick in 2021 had won at every stop on his way to the pros—including a national championship with Clemson in 2018—and his presence was largely expected to morph the downtrodden Jacksonville Jaguars into contenders. … Through four-and-a-half seasons, though, he hasn't had anything close to a transformative effect on the long-suffering organization.”
Lawrence has an underwhelming 27-42 record as a starter in Jacksonville, and turnovers have been an issue throughout his career. He led the league with 17 interceptions as a rookie, and he tossed 14 during the 2023 season. He’s thrown 53 in his career, compared to just 79 touchdown tosses. That’s not a great ratio.
The Clemson product did lead the Jaguars to a postseason victory during his sophomore season in 2022, but that haven’t been back since. In fact, they haven’t even posted a winning record since, though they have an opportunity to do so this season after a 5-4 start.
In order to be “overrated,” some segment of the population has to rate you highly, and that isn’t really the case with Lawrence, at least outside of Jacksonville. Overall, he seems to be viewed as a largely average professional QB, who has yet to live up to his draft position. He still has time to alter that perception, but the clock is ticking.
