TreVeyon Henderson injury update doesn't bode well for Pats RB's Week 1 status

The New England Patriots were back on the practice field Sunday as they prepare for the Week 1 contest against the Seattle Seahawks and all eyes were once again on the lookout for running back TreVeyon Henderson.

Henderson hasn't practiced since Aug. 24 after coming down with an ankle injury.

With just days to go before the season-opener on Wednesday night, here's the latest report on Henderson's status from practice on Sunday.

TreVeyon Henderson injury update

According to Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Henderson was once again not at practice on Sunday. Christian Barmore and Ben Brown were also not present.

"Christian Barmore is a new absence at Patriots practice today. TreVeyon Henderson and Ben Brown are also not on the field," Barth reported.

On Saturday, head coach Mike Vrabel hinted that Henderson could return to practice, but that never came to fruition, and the same was the case on Sunday.

The Patriots will release their first injury report of the season later in the day, but for now Henderson's Week 1 status continues to be in doubt.

What's the Pats' RB plan without Henderson?

If Henderson doesn't play in Week 1, we would expect a heavy dose of Rhamondre Stevenson, who ESPN's Mike Reiss labeled the clear lead back in New England.

Reiss goes on to note that the Pats only have one other running back on their 53-man roster in Corey Kiner, but New England will certainly elevate another back from the practice squad, whether that be Hassan Haskins or Lan Larison.

Haskins has the edge if the Pats want a more experienced player, but Reiss adds that Larison could get the call if New England is more worried about having someone who is more familiar with Josh McDaniels' system.

"Larison gets the edge in terms of background in coordinator Josh McDaniels' system (critical with pass protection in mind), while Haskins would be the pick if NFL experience (44 games) was deemed a priority. Both factor into the mix on special teams, especially on punt protection, which is an area the Patriots have spent countless hours practicing throughout the summer," Reiss said.

No matter who is elevated, Stevenson is going to see plenty of work if Henderson is sidelined, and we'd expect a mix of Kiner and one of the other two backs to spell him.
