Trent Williams jabs Rams fans over 49ers’ LA takeovers: ‘Had to go to Australia’

Trent Williams couldn’t help himself.

The star 49ers lineman jokingly said it was his team that had a home game taken away from them, rather than the Rams, when they play in Melbourne, Australia, on Sept. 10.

The Australia game is a lost home date for the Rams, as the 49ers will host their second matchup of the season in Week 14.

“It’s probably why we had to go to Australia to play the Rams to kinda cover up some of the deficiencies to ticket sales on their end,” Williams said.

The joke by Williams refers to the issues the Rams have with filling their own stadium when they play the 49ers.

When the Rams came back to Los Angeles in 2016, the state was already home to the 49ers, Chargers and Raiders, giving the Rams the task of building up a fan base.

After the team finished its first season in Los Angeles, they averaged 57,024 fans in attendance, finishing 31st in the NFL.

Since then, they’ve quickly made their way up the ranks, hosting an average of 73,194 people in attendance in 2024.

The numbers definitely show encouraging signs that Los Angeles is starting to become Rams territory. The issue that has stayed constant is fans of other teams overflooding the seats. Notably, fans of the 49ers.

Whenever San Francisco has come to town, the seats in SoFi Stadium have been flooded with the color red coming out.

In 2022, SoFi Stadium was home to the NFC Championship game that was played between the Rams and the 49ers.

Former 49ers defensive back Ambry Thomas, asked fans on X if the team could get a red out in “Levi south.”

Williams isn’t pleased with having to make the long trek to Australia.

“Nobody wants to travel 20 hours to play a football game,” Williams said. “Nobody would ever be excited to do that.”
