Travis Hunter walked at Colorado graduation, but degree still pending, per USA Today

Travis Hunter has officially begun his time in Jacksonville, participating in rookie minicamp. The former Colorado star is aiming to make the same kind of impact in the NFL that he did at the collegiate level. As a two-way player, Hunter won the Heisman Trophy over Ashton Jeanty, Dillon Gabriel, and this year’s first overall draft pick, Cam Ward.

Before arriving in Jacksonville, Hunter accomplished something special back in Colorado—he participated in graduation, marking a significant milestone both on the field and in the classroom.

“How many Heisman Trophy winners have their degrees? Shoot, how many NFL players have them? The answer is: not enough. This shows what a special young man Travis Hunter is. Something tells me this football thing is going to work out for him, but if not, he'll be just fine," Nate Jackson posted.

On the field, Hunter—alongside his teammate Shedeur Sanders—had his jersey retired, a testament to the lasting impact both players had on the Colorado program. It initially appeared that Hunter graduated a year early, but that wasn't quite the case. He only walked the stage; he's not set to officially graduate until this coming December.

“What actually happened is a little more complicated. He is not scheduled to graduate until December after applying to graduate in fall 2025, according to an athletics department spokesman. He attended the May 8 graduation ceremony in Boulder anyway to be able to experience it now, before he begins his pro football career as the No. 2 overall draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to the school,” Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today wrote.

Colorado allowing Hunter to walk early for the experience was a thoughtful gesture, even though he still has another semester to complete. By next December, when he officially graduates, Hunter will be living out his NFL dream—following the path the Jaguars have laid out for him, rather than walking across a stage like he did just days ago.
