The Chicago Cubs are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball and will look to add to the roster ahead of the trade deadline.
The Cubs will look to add another bat to the lineup, and MLB analyst Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints proposed a deal that would see Chicago acquire Alex Bregman from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster.
Cubs acquire:
- Alex Bregman
Red Sox acquire:
- Matt Shaw
- Jefferson Rojas
“A trade for Bregman only really makes sense for the Cubs if it involves Shaw,” Bassett wrote. “The third basemen came into the season as one of the top prospects in baseball, but he has since taken over full time at the hot corner for the Cubs…
“They are ready to win now and should be trade-deadline buyers,” Bassett added. “Additionally, a lot of their top youngsters either just graduated from their prospect status or are ready to make an impact at the major-league level soon. The team doesn't have innings for all of these prospects, though, so making a consolidation trade for a star makes sense.”

Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in the offseason. However, he has an opt-out after this season, so Boston could look to trade him and get some assets back for him if the Red Sox sell at the deadline.
Bregman is hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season. He's a two-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion as well as a one-time Gold Glove Award winner and one-time Silver Slugger Award winner.
In return, Chicago would trade Shaw, who would replace Bergman as Boston’s third baseman. The 23-year-old was a first-round pick in 2023 and has struggled at the plate this season, as he’s hitting .220 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs. But, he fits in with the Red Sox's young core of Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, among others.
The Cubs would also trade Rojas, who’s their fourth-ranked prospect. The middle infielder is 20 and playing in A+. He’s projected to reach the majors in 2026 by MLB Pipeline.
