Toronto fans urge team to lock in Bichette before free agency

Bo Bichette’s bat is red hot and so is the pressure on the Toronto Blue Jays front office. As the team rolled to a franchise-record 11th straight home win on Monday night, the shortstop played his part once again, driving in two runs in a 4-1 win over the New York Yankees.

The 27-year-old went 1-for-4 in the win and now has hits in 12 of his last 14 games. Through July, Bichette is hitting .346 with a .404 on-base percentage and a .558 slugging percentage. He’s added a home run, six RBI, and five multi-hit performances this month alone.

After the game, Bichette praised the energy in the building, telling MLB.com's Keegan Matheson the Rogers Centre crowd reminded him of watching Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson as a teenager. That era, of course, included playoff runs and an AL MVP trophy for Donaldson in 2015.

Bichette’s comments fired up Toronto fans, and the replies to Matheson’s post were filled with pleas for the front office to act.

“Get this deal done. I do not want to see Bo everywhere else” one fan posted.

Another chimed in: “Alright, just offer him a 10-year deal.”

“You guys generate those cheers with your incredible play this season, Bo,” one fan wrote. “Really hope he re-ups. We can’t let him go.”

Finally a fan said: "Keep him away from the Yankees!"

As it stands, Bichette is in the final year of his arbitration extension. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason unless the Blue Jays lock him up first.

The calls for action are only getting louder. And if Bichette keeps delivering at the plate, Toronto’s decision-makers will be out of reasons to wait.
