Top-Ranked 2027 prospect addresses NIL talk after Texas Tech visit

Texas Tech football continues to make waves on the recruiting trail, but one of the top names in the country wants to set the record straight when it comes to money and motivation.

LaDamion Guyton, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class per Rivals, recently visited the Red Raiders and made it clear he isn’t chasing the biggest NIL payout. The elite EDGE prospect from Savannah Christian explained his stance in a conversation with Rivals reporter Chad Simmons.

LaDamion Guyton focused on NFL Path, not NIL bidding wars

“My goal is to get to the NFL,” Guyton said. “It’s not about who throws the most money at me. I want to play somewhere that helps me grow and puts me in a position to take care of my family long-term. Development is the priority.”

Guyton has the stats to back up his lofty ranking. Over his last two seasons, the 6-foot-5 defender has posted 134 total tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles across 20 games. He’s one of the most dominant defensive players in the country regardless of class.

Texas Tech is fresh off a major recruiting victory with 2026 offensive lineman Felix Ojo, who committed earlier this month and reportedly signed a three-year, $5.1 million revenue-sharing deal. Guyton’s comments suggest he isn’t swayed by similar offers, even if they’re on the table.

Head coach Joey McGuire has positioned Texas Tech as a rising program willing to invest in elite talent. Since 2000, the Red Raiders have had 41 players selected in the NFL Draft, with edge rusher Tyree Wilson going in the first round in 2023.

Guyton has no shortage of powerhouse options. He holds offers from Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Oregon, and several others. Whether Texas Tech can beat out those programs remains to be seen, but their messaging and momentum may give them a shot.

For now, Guyton’s focus is on finding a school that can sharpen his skills and turn him into an NFL draft pick, not just write the biggest check.
