Sometimes I think the two things that monthly comics are doing best in 2025 are superheroes and horror, and that’s certainly reflected in this week’s Top Comics to Buy for July 2. If it wasn’t for the fact that I do five weekly recommendations, we might even have a perfect split between the two. But as is, it’s pretty close, with three top-notch superhero books and two spooky creator-owned comics.
The one thing all five books share in common, of course, is that they were my favorites this week. You can as always read why I liked each of them below, followed by the usual set of uniform release lists … enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for July 2, 2025
Absolute Green Lantern #4
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Jahnoy Lindsay
Letterer: Lucas Gattoni
Publisher: DC Comics
JO AND HAL VERSUS ABIN SUR! Jo and Hal hatch a plan to strike back at Abin Sur and free Evergreen. But is their understanding of Abin Sur and his plans for Evergreen correct, or will they just create a bigger disaster in the process?
Why It’s Cool: As with Absolute Flash, this book (in my humble opinion) obscured its true core concept a bit — which actually made the first arc better, giving it a crescendo as the full scope of what the book was interested in became clear. As a result, I thought Absolute Green Lantern #4 was the best issue of this series yet, and an easy choice for my list of Top Comics to Buy for July 2.
Price: $4.99
Batgirl #9
Writer: Tate Brombal
Artist: Takeshi Miyazawa
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
Batgirl is on the run–but not for long. As three deadly warriors from the League of Shadows, the Blood of Wu, and the Unburied each trail her, Cassandra Cain arrives at a ranch seeking answers from her mother’s past…but time is running out. As shocking family ties unravel, the first of the three swords arrives, hell-bent on ending Batgirl’s story for good.
Why It’s Cool: As readers you don’t often see this, but sometimes there are books that end up sort of being my sixth favorite of the week, week-in and week-out. As a result, they end up in the Other Comics I Enjoyed section, but not here up top. Well, Batgirl has been one of these books, but this week it breaks through, ending up as one of my top five. This book has not had a bad issue yet, and it’s done a great job building narrative momentum, getting better and better as it goes. You should absolutely be reading it.

Plague House #4
Writer: Michael W. Conrad
Artist: Dave Chisholm
Publisher: Oni Press
The ultimate 21st century haunted house saga comes full circle! Del arrives to cleanse the Salton Sea, only to find the evil curse on the place is greater than he can handle. Seeking more information from Holland-still hospitalized and overwhelmed by nightmares-he breaks his only rule in an effort to help his friend and learn how to finally end this . . . no matter the cost.
Why It’s Cool: The publisher’s preview text for this one calls it “the ultimate 21st century haunted house saga”, and I think that’s a great way to describe it. It’s definitely a classic haunted house story that is also very much of our current moment. That’s great, and fun…but moreover, this finale issue is super disturbing. Both writer Michael W. Conrad and Dave Chisholm bring their A game in terror to the end of this one. What a great, deeply horrifying comic.

Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story #1
Writer: Maytal Zchut
Artist: Leila Leiz
Colorist: Alex Sinclair
Letterer: Rob Leigh
Publisher: Image Comics – Ghost Machine
Lifelong friends Sophie and Violet were practically sisters. Now at college, they’ve been slowly drifting apart. But when Violet accidentally drowns at a sorority hazing, a devastated Sophie pleads with the psychic SISTER HOOD to contact her dead friend. Sometimes you get what you wish for…but on Hyde Street, there’s always a cost…and it’s a killer.
Why It’s Cool: Another dark and disturbing comic, this one is cool in part because it’s about a lifelong friendship…but also death, and ghosts, and almost Final Destination-esque brushes with dark destinies. Plus, there’s stuff in their about college sorority hazing, and that’s one of those narrative ingridients that basically always works for me.

Ultimate Wolverine #7
Writer: Chris Condon
Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Bryan Valenza
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Has the OPPOSITION finally helped Logan reclaim his identity? But what lengths will COLOSSUS, MAGIK and OMEGA RED go to keep their prized weapon? And don’t miss Ultimate MAGIK revealing the depth of her power!
Why It’s Cool: I suppose this series couldn’t be all mostly-silent issues where Wolverine lays bloody waste to everything. This savage book slows things down just a bit here to up the stakes for (presumably) more bloody waste-laying to come. I really love this series, and how it’s centered a Wolverine Winter Soldier as it explores the status quo for familiar X-Men within the context of this new (and awesome) Ultimate Universe.
